The Amsterdam Museum tells the story of the city of Amsterdam: about the past, the present and the future. In this museum you can view the historical collection of the city of Amsterdam. It consists of more than 80,000 objects including paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, books, furniture, textiles, glass, ceramics, medals and applied arts. The collection has grown since the sixteenth century. In the nineteenth century, several Amsterdam citizens left their art collections to the city. Museum Willet-Holthuysen is a fine example of this. The Amsterdam Museum is located in the former Burgerweeshuis on the Kalverstraat. This monumental building was built in 1580.
